Unlike a cow, which pulls grass with its tongue, sheep cut grass and herbs with their teeth. The jaws grind back and forth, a bit like clippers. As a result, the grass after a visit from a sheep is much shorter than when a cow is in the pasture. A farmer can put cows in the meadow first and then sheep, but never the other way around.

Another important function of grazing sheep is that they trample the ground on dikes. This prevents bushes and trees from growing that damage the dike with their roots.
